It’s December! It’s an amazing time! I’ve completed all the decorations for now. I have a small tree up and have brought out all my favorite things. It’s as if I’m seeing old friends again as I unwrap each precious piece of Christmas. I love this time of the year.
It’s also a time of remembering…remembering those that are important in my life and now gone; transitioned to another dimension yet still with me.
Ten years ago, my husband passed away. He was like a child at Christmas. His eyes would light up as he planned each moment of the season. His exuberance and excitement were infectious. We would decorate our house from top to bottom. It was almost a full week of preparing and putting out all the decorations inside and outside of our home. I see and feel his excitement and energy as I bring out some of our favorite things. It’s a celebration of his enthusiasm and love.
Our holiday celebration was in the Italian tradition. Christmas Eve was the big event. Our food consisted of 25 items representing December 25. Fish was served, no red meat, and the presentation of abundance ranged from shrimp cocktail, shrimp scampi, mussels in white sauce made especially for my father-in-law, fried eels, fried smelts, cocktail crab and stone crabs (a later addition). Pasta with marinara sauce overflowed. The aromas from the kitchen made my mouth water. My mother-in-law would bring the bread from her favorite bakery in New Jersey! It was truly a feast!
Fourteen years ago, my mother passed away. I was an only child, so I was always her favorite! My mother worked hard all her life and when retirement came, I was blessed to have her in my life even more. My mother liked decorating, but not with the enthusiasm that I did. When I was a child, we didn’t get our tree and decorate until Dec. 23. The anticipation of Christmas as a child was almost painful as I waited to get ready for December 25. As I opened the boxes containing some of her items, her love and presence embraced me.
It’s a bittersweet memory from past Christmas celebrations, yet I choose to embrace this new life here in Tallahassee fully. My son is 500 miles away in Miami and I look forward to seeing him this month. My family are now the friends that I have made here. I am one lucky lady.
I choose not to grieve, but celebrate the memories of those long gone. They are still here in my heart never to be erased or removed. They are FOREVER here.
How will YOU choose to remember those who have passed on whether from death, divorce, or choice? Will the story in your memory be the painful one or the one that is poignant and happy? Will the feeling you have be one of angst and stress or one of joy and celebration? You get to choose.
The holiday season gives us the opportunity to remember with love, forgive with love, embrace with love and share with love.
