This weekend was special. I was in Miami with my son, Tim. This was a weekend that we had planned for a couple of months to celebrate his birthday. It’s a long drive from Tallahassee to Miami and I now have the pleasure of dropping off my sweet neighbor, Dorothy, at her daughter’s home in Melbourne and continue down to Miami. Another bonus is using Dorothy’s hybrid car that gets twice the gas mileage as Bernie, my 1998 Lincoln Town Car.
I had no idea that I would get to experience the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in Miami. As I drove down Bayshore Drive to Coconut Grove, I glanced down each side street to see debris piled as high as 4 feet to clear the road for residents to return to their homes. I had not seen it this way since Hurricane Andrew 25 years ago. The huge banyon tree outside my hotel room window was bruised, battered and broken, yet I knew it would grow back even stronger than before just as it had recovered after Andrew.
I also had no idea that I would be writing about recovery again this week. The banyons in Miami are not the only living things recovering from a hurricane or major human-caused event leaving people feeling beleaguered, lost, alone and in shock.
Because this horrendous event occurred in the sign of Libra, my focus will be on the Libra energy shown by those present in Las Vegas and around the world after the shootings.
Libra is about the need to cooperate with others and to create beauty, balance, companionship and harmony. It’s about living with a sense of justice and fair play. That’s exactly what survivors at the concert showed the injured and many didn’t know each other; they just stepped up to help. If anything, good at all comes from an event of this magnitude, it’s the caring, support, and love of others in time of need.
Let’s not wait for an emergency, a hurricane, or a traumatic happening by a lone shooter from a hotel room window to show our compassion for others. Each of us can be that person, The One, for those we know or don’t know. And it begins with us.
- No criticism.
- No hate.
- No comparing.
- No discrimination
Just care and compassion. What a wonderful world to live in.
May each one of you be blessed with having The One in your life and the privilege of being The One for another.
